Spring Experimental Science Classes

June 4, 2015

Throughout April and May, TCA associates taught experimental science classes to sixteen 7th grade classes at nearby Spanaway Middle School and Liberty Middle School. The nearly 500 total students who participated in the classes were introduced to Toray Industries, water filtration technology, TCA and prepreg manufacturing.

The presentation began with an introduction to Toray Industries, Inc. and TCA. Learning first about water filtration, the students were taught about the idea of separating particles by size, and got to see Toray's ultrafiltration membrane separate clear water from orange juice.

After water filtration, the lesson moved to carbon fiber and prepreg. The students learned what prepreg is, and the steps that it takes to make it. Students discussed the environmental benefits of water filtration and carbon fiber, like providing drinking water around the world and reducing greenhouse gasses from airplanes.

These classes conclude the series for the 2014-2015 school year, but TCA looks forward to being able to visit more schools during the next year.

CPTC Aerospace Career Fair

June 1, 2015

On Friday, May 29, five associates attended the Clover Park Technical College Aerospace Career Fair to speak with students about career opportunities at TCA. Sherie Hodges, Eric Olson, Jay Berndt, MicKenzie Martinez, and Chris Sims met with students who are about to graduate from CPTC's Composite Manufacturing program. The career fair was geared specifically towards these graduating students so they can make connections with employers as they prepare to begin their careers in the aerospace industry. Other companies present at the event included Boeing, Aerotek, and Alaska/Horizon Air. TCA is happy to participate in events like these to connect with potential employees and educate students on career and growth opportunities.

Earth Day at TCA

May 4, 2015

On April 22, Earth Day, CTCA hosted an event that featured speakers and booths from local environmental preservation-related groups. In addition to TCA leadership, speakers included Jennifer States from the Port of Port Angeles, speaking on behalf of the Composite Recycling Technology Center, as well as Ryan Wolfe from UW Formula Motorsports. Other groups represented included Tacoma Power, Profile Composites, Peninsula College, Department of Fish and Wildlife Adopt an Access program, South Puget Sound Salmon Enhancement Group, Citizens for a Healthy Bay, and Pierce Trips.

Associates got to enjoy the sunny Pacific Northwest weather and learn about TCA's commitment to environmental preservation in partnership with many organizations in our region. TCA looks forward to ongoing opportunities to work with these partners and continue its efforts to protect the environment.

Experimental Science Classes at Frontier Middle School

February 27, 2015

TCA Associate Charles Queen engages with students at the Experimental Science Class.

As part of its ongoing CSR and community outreach activities, Toray Composites had the opportunity to visit four 7th grade classrooms at Frontier Middle School, part of the nearby Bethel School District, on February 19 and 20, 2015.

Associates from TCA presented an Experimental Science Class to the students, which demonstrated how advanced materials made by Toray have a positive impact on the environment. Examples included water filtration technology and how it helps with water shortage, and how carbon fiber products help to decrease global warming.

The students were also eager to learn about careers in the fields of science and technology, and the TCA associates attending the classes answered questions about their career paths.

TCA will present the same class to two more schools before the end of this school year, and looks forward to these opportunities to educate local students about our company.
